Sheriff Les K. Hill
Safe Streets Safe Schools

Sheriff Les Hill was born in Jellico, TN, in January 1958. After a brief period in Corbin, KY, his family relocated to Boone County in 1960 in search of better opportunities. They settled on the historic Stephens Farm, now home to Boone Woods Park and Stephens Elementary School—grounds where today’s children still play, just as Les once did.
Les has been a proud resident of Boone County for nearly his entire life. His family later moved to nearby Conrad Lane, where his mother lived until her passing in 2013. As the eldest of six siblings, Les comes from a family with a strong tradition of community service—many of whom, along with their spouses, have served Boone County in various professional capacities.
Some of Sheriff Hill’s fondest memories stem from his time in the Boone County School District. He began his education at Burlington Elementary and graduated as a member of the Conner Senior High School Class of 1976. A Cougar at heart, he continues to embody the values instilled during his formative years.
Following high school, Les held positions with TWA, Bob Sumerel Tire, and the Boone County Auxiliary Police. In March 1989, he was hired as a Deputy by then Sheriff Elmer Wright. Over the course of his 36-year career with the department, Les steadily advanced through the ranks, always remaining steadfast in his dedication to the county that offered him the opportunity to pursue his lifelong passion for public service.
Throughout his tenure, Sheriff Hill has served on numerous task forces and committees, responding to calls and working countless late nights and weekends. Among his many achievements, he considers being named Leader of the SWAT Team one of his proudest moments. His leadership has also been instrumental in the development of key community initiatives, including the Safe Schools Program, Safe Streets Program, and the School Resource Officer Program, which has become a cornerstone of public safety in our local schools. Les also played a pivotal role in bringing to the Commonwealth of Kentucky what is now known as Amber Alerts.
Sheriff Hill’s commitment to Boone County runs deep. He resides in Burlington in a home built by the loving hands of his family—including his brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews—alongside his wife. Over the past 65 years, Les has raised two sons, both graduates of Conner Senior High School and active members of the Boone County community. They have established their own families in the county, giving Les three cherished grandchildren.
Lastly, Sheriff Hill firmly believes in being a law enforcement officer for all people. Since the day he earned a promotion that came with a desk, on it has sat a plaque bearing a quote from Theodore Roosevelt: “No man is above the law and no man is below it.” These words guide his philosophy: that every individual deserves to feel protected and safe in a county where they can live, work, and raise their family without fear.
